Castle in Merchingen Up for Sale, Requires Extensive Renovation

A 500-year-old castle in the Ravenstein district of Merchingen is currently on the market, with a purchase price of 150,000 euros. However, the castle, which has been unoccupied since around 1990, requires a complete renovation that could cost up to three million euros.

The castle, built in the 16th century, offers 600 square meters of living space with 25 rooms. Despite its age, the property boasts a sizeable 1,800 square meters of land, located in a quiet area. The castle includes a highway connection a few kilometers away, making it an attractive prospect for potential buyers.

The castle's exterior has been affected by the passage of time. Ivy is growing through ancient wooden windows, and the walls are crooked, ceilings are tilting, and ornate ceilings threaten to collapse. The castle does not currently have running water or electricity, but fast internet with up to 250 Mbit is available, thanks to fiber optic cables present at the main entrance.

The renovated part of the castle houses a small hotel, a festival hall, and conference rooms, demonstrating the potential of the property. Two buildings of the castle have already been renovated by the Ravenstein community.

Over 100 interested parties have responded to the real estate ad, with half dropping out after viewing the virtual tour. The remaining interested parties have requested on-site viewings. However, the castle's current state may deter some potential buyers, as the purchase price does not cover the estimated renovation costs.

The heritage protection authorities have a say in the restoration of the castle, ensuring that any renovations preserve its historical integrity. If no financially strong investor or lover of history is found, the castle may collapse, taking 500 years of history with it.

The old Schloss Merchingen was last put up for sale in September 2025, and as of now, it is not reported to have been acquired by anyone. The castle's future remains uncertain, but its potential is clear, offering a unique opportunity for someone to restore this historical gem.
