Chinese electric vehicle giant, BYD, is set to take a major leap in expanding its global footprint with a new European hub in Hungary. BYD's CEO, Wang Chuanfu, and Hungary's Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, announced a press conference that this hub will create up to 2,000 job opportunities.
This ambitious project aims to serve as a one-stop-shop for sales, customer service, testing, and development of BYD's EV models catering to local markets.
Before making waves in Hungary, BYD has already been present in the EU nation, having established its first European factory in Komarom back in April 2016, with a second one under construction. With Hungary's favorable business climate towards Chinese companies compared to other EU states, it comes as no surprise that BYD is intensifying its presence in the country.
With expansion on their minds, BYD is projected to sell half its vehicles overseas by 2030, as reported by Reuters. The company has surpassed Volkswagen to hold the number one spot in China, the world's largest auto market, and its global sales have surged to levels just behind the US traditional automotive giants, Ford, and General Motors.
BYD's growth is primarily driven by foreign markets to avoid the fierce competition back in China. In fact, Wang already hinted that the majority of the company's profits would come from overseas markets in the future. With ample financial resources, BYD intends to continue building factories abroad without the need for partnerships.
Although the hub faces tariffs on imported electric vehicles into the EU, BYD plans to manufacture vehicles in Europe to cater to local demands. Keep an eye on the streets of Europe for more Chinese EVs; it's no longer just trickles, but a meaningful flood in the offing!
