Bugatti Shifts Business Approach Towards Increased Elitism
Bugatti, the renowned luxury automobile manufacturer, has announced a new direction in its production strategy, focusing on the creation of unique, one-off hypercars through its ultra-exclusive Solitaire program.
The Solitaire program, a revival of Bugatti's historic coachbuilding tradition from the 1920s and '30s, promises to offer bespoke hypercars with custom coachbuilt bodywork and interiors. This move follows Bugatti's announcement of producing more one-off cars, with the existing lineup expected to lean a little harder into this new direction.
The first car under this program, christened "Brouillard," is inspired by Ettore Bugatti’s fascination with horses. The Brouillard, scheduled for unveiling during Monterey Car Week in August 2025, draws design inspiration from the Bugatti Veyron, celebrating its 20th anniversary next year.
The Brouillard features a custom white exterior with a fixed ducktail spoiler and silhouette influenced by classic art principles. Its interior boasts a green-themed design with green-tinted carbon fiber, custom-woven fabric from Paris, a glass roof bringing in natural light, and detailed horse embroidery. Under the hood, the Brouillard is powered by Bugatti’s legendary quad-turbocharged W16 engine, producing nearly 1,600 horsepower.
The Solitaire program aims to produce up to two bespoke vehicles per year, designed and built at Bugatti’s new Design Studio in a former techno club (E-Werk) in Berlin. Each car is tailored for discerning collectors, with craftsmanship taken to the highest level and costs recovered directly from customers—estimated around $20 million, although exact prices are undisclosed.
Bugatti’s CEO Mate Rimac has highlighted that customization has become a significant business, with customers previously spending on average half a million euros on bespoke features. The Solitaire program represents the brand's next step in maximizing personalization and exclusivity.
The Type 57 SC Atlantic, a one-of-a-kind car created by Bugatti in its early days, remains a piece of art on wheels to this day. The Solitaire and other one-of-one cars from Bugatti will likely follow in its footsteps, produced using coachbuilding methods reminiscent of the methods used for kings and princes in the past.
As we move towards the unveiling of the Brouillard and the Solitaire program, more details about this exciting new venture will be revealed on August 7. If you have any tips or insights to share, we encourage you to get in touch.
The Solitaire program, with its focus on bespoke hypercars, questions the boundaries between the automotive industry and luxury finance, as each car, priced around $20 million, caters to discerning collectors who seek both exclusivity and personalized experiences. This program, drawing inspiration from Bugatti's historic coachbuilding tradition, aligns itself not only with the automotive sector but also the transportation industry, where innovation and unique design hold significant value.
