Li Auto, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, has made a swift change to the configuration strategy for its recently launched i8 electric vehicle, just a week after its market debut. The decision was primarily driven by user feedback and a desire to simplify the product offering.

The company found that 98% of users preferred the mid-range Max and high-end Ultra versions over the entry Pro version. Users complained that having three versions was complicated and that some high-end features were not available as options across all versions.

In response, Li Auto combined the original Pro, Max, and Ultra editions into a single "Standard Edition," based on the Max version’s specifications. This adjustment effectively scrapped the lowest-end version, enhancing the configuration of the standard model by including a platinum audio system (valued at 10,000 yuan) and offering optional rear-cabin entertainment screens as add-ons.

The move acts as a disguised price cut. Users who initially chose more expensive versions gain more features at a lower or equivalent price, addressing "pain points" such as the lack of a refrigerator in the Pro version and the inability to add certain options in the Max version.

Li Auto's CEO, Li Xiang, described the change as "receptive to advice" and an effort to overcome previous "inertial thinking" by aligning the i8's value proposition with the simpler approach used for the Li ONE model.

This change comes as Li Auto faces challenges such as insufficient brand appeal and unclear consumer perception during market expansion. The company initially adopted a multi-version strategy to gather users, build reputation, and drive sales. However, the complexity of the options seemed to have created confusion among consumers.

The Li Auto i8 was initially launched in China with a starting price of 44,830 USD. Since then, the starting price has been adjusted from 349,800 yuan (48,600 USD) to 339,800 yuan (47,200 USD). The vast majority of i8 pre-orders have been for the Max and Ultra versions.

The controversy surrounding the Li Auto i8's crash test has been a topic of online debate. However, it was not mentioned in the previous bullet points provided.

The company hopes to rebuild clear consumer understanding of the i8's product value by returning to its single-configuration strategy. This strategy, which was successful with the Li Auto One model from its launch in 2019 to its facelift in 2021, maintained all core functions as standard equipment. Only body colour, wheels, and electric pedals were available as options for the Li Auto One.

In the new configuration, only body colour, wheels, and electric pedals remain as options, with the refrigerator now standard equipment. This decision should help to address consumer concerns and improve overall satisfaction with the Li Auto i8.
