Bochum Resident, 82, Loses €555k in Sophisticated Online Scam

An 82-year-old Bochum resident has fallen victim to a sophisticated online scam, losing a staggering 555,000 euros. This alarming incident is part of a growing trend of cyber trading fraud, with victims across the region losing millions.

The elderly resident was lured in by a professionally designed online ad promising high returns. Once the money was 'invested', the scammers demanded fake fees, using fear to pressure the victim into paying. This is a common tactic, with victims often contacted personally or by phone by supposed investment advisors displaying high expertise and manipulating victims emotionally.

Marco Bischoff, a contact person at the Police Bochum, urges vigilance. He warns that scammers are increasingly inviting victims to investment chat groups on messaging services, which are often pure scam platforms. Recent cases include a 56-year-old Witten resident losing 430,000 euros to fake stocks after being contacted on social media, and a 71-year-old Bochum woman investing 280,000 euros in supposed cryptocurrencies after being lured by a fake news article. Cyber trading fraud is growing rapidly, using increasingly sophisticated methods to deceive people.

The Bochum Police Headquarters reports significant financial losses totaling over 1.26 million euros due to cyber trading fraud. To protect against such losses, the police advise staying vigilant, reporting suspicious activities promptly, and maintaining a critical mindset. If you suspect you've been a victim of fraud, contact Marco Bischoff at the Police Bochum on 0234 909-1021 or via email at [email protected].
