BMI Group Enhances Metrology with LK Metrology's Portable Arm Solution
BMI Group's Crawley Technical Center has adopted a portable measuring arm inspection solution from LK Metrology to enhance its metrology processes. The system is employed to meticulously inspect die-cast aluminium moulds for concrete tiles, which can command a hefty replacement cost of over £1 million.
Luke Kelly, a design engineer at BMI Group, introduced the new system in July 2024. It comprises a 7-axis, multi-sensor FREEDOM Arm Classic Scan with a 2.73-metre reach and a laser line scanner. This advanced solution can accommodate a wide range of component sizes, from thin 0.5 mm sheet metal to large solar roof panels.
The system uses Innovmetric's PolyWorks Inspector software for advanced point cloud analysis and generating detailed reports. This technology offers more precise data than traditional methods, enabling better analysis and predictions. The metrology staff at the Crawley Technical Center now benefit from this enhanced capability in their research and development, and quality control processes.
BMI UK & Ireland, part of the global BMI Group, is committed to maintaining high-quality standards. The new LK Metrology system ensures that roof tiles are manufactured within a tolerance of plus or minus half a millimetre. The BMI Technical Center is also considering acquiring an LK metrology-grade tripod for in-situ quality control in factories, further underscoring their dedication to precision and excellence in the tile-making industry.
