BLS to Phase Out Cash Payments at Ticket Machines in Late 2025

BLS, a major Swiss railway company operating in the Bern region, has announced plans to phase out cash payments at its ticket machines. The move, set to begin in late 2025, will see machines accept debit and credit cards, Twint, Postcard, and an anonymous prepaid card. However, the decision has sparked debate, with the Canton of Bern's parliament requesting the retention of cash options, which was subsequently rejected due to high maintenance costs.

BLS' shift towards cash-free transactions is part of a wider trend among Swiss railway companies. The move aims to enhance security and punctuality, as bus drivers will no longer sell tickets. The majority shareholder of BLS supports this transition, anticipating annual savings of around 400,000 francs. However, not all cantons are following suit. Cash payments will remain an option in the cantons of Lucerne and Neuchâtel.

The Canton of Bern, which would be significantly impacted by this change, has expressed its desire to maintain cash functionality. Bernmobil and RBS, local public transport providers, will continue to allow cash payments at some stationary machines in stations, but not on buses. The cantonal parliament's request to keep cash options was turned down due to the high maintenance costs involved in maintaining the service.

BLS' move to cash-free ticket machines is set to begin in late 2025, with the company expecting significant annual savings. While the majority shareholder supports this change, the Canton of Bern has expressed its desire to retain cash options. The final decision lies with BLS, and customers are advised to stay informed about the upcoming changes.
