Bergisch Gladbach Launches First Bike Lanes with Unique Safety Rules
Bergisch Gladbach has launched its first bike lanes on Hasenweg and Nachtigallenstraße, with a unique set of rules to ensure safety and encourage cycling. The city's first deputy mayor, Ragnar Migenda, hailed the opening, highlighting their role in modern mobility and combating climate change.
The new bike lanes, part of the F2 route, allow motorized traffic but with strict conditions. Motorists must yield to cyclists and keep their speed at a maximum of 30 km/h. Parking is permanently banned, but brief stops for entry/exit or loading/unloading are permitted if they don't hinder cyclists. All road users have priority at intersections, eliminating the 'right before left' rule. Cyclists can ride side by side, and cycling on the opened stretch is already high and expected to rise.
The city plans to gradually expand its bike network in the coming years, aiming to make cycling more attractive, safer, and efficient. These lanes serve as a crucial connection in the city's future bike network.
