Beef and Poultry Processing Plant in Postville Faces Financial Penalty for Water Pollution Violations

Agri Star Meat and Poultry, a Postville, Iowa-based company, has agreed to a $50,000 penalty settlement to resolve a lawsuit concerning approximately 60 wastewater violations over several years. The violations included excessive levels of ammonia, chloride, copper, and other pollutants discharged into Hecker Creek, which flows into the Yellow River.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) cited Agri Star for these permit breaches under its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). As part of the settlement, Agri Star has committed to achieving full compliance with its NPDES permit by December 31, 2026.

The company's wastewater treatment system discharges roughly one million gallons daily into Hecker Creek. The DNR has been monitoring the plant's wastewater for excessive amounts of ammonia, chloride, copper, and other pollutants. The settlement comes after Agri Star was accused of these violations, which have contributed to toxic ammonia concentrations in Hecker Creek.

The settlement was announced by the Iowa Attorney General, Brenna Bird. The terms of the settlement require Agri Star to pay the $50,000 penalty and take measures to address the toxic ammonia concentrations in Hecker Creek. These measures include upgrading its wastewater treatment system and implementing regular monitoring and reporting procedures.

The settlement follows a lawsuit filed by a citizen group in February 2025, seeking enforcement and penalties over these environmental violations. The lawsuit highlighted ongoing public concern about contamination in Northeast Iowa waterways.
