Bavaria's Landscape Conservation Funding Under Threat

Funding for landscape and nature park conservation in Bavaria is under threat. The Landscape Conservation and Nature Park Directive (LNPD) funds from the Free State of Bavaria may be cut, raising concerns about the future of these vital spaces. Meanwhile, potential alternative funding sources and initiatives are being explored in Baden-Württemberg.

The 'WE make landscape' campaign, active in Bavaria, is dedicated to preserving diverse habitats and raising awareness about landscape conservation. It aims to protect and maintain the unique ecosystems that support biodiversity.

In response to potential funding cuts, organizations in Baden-Württemberg are stepping up. The Stiftung Umwelt und Entwicklung Nordrhein-Westfalen offers grants up to €200,000 for environmental and biodiversity projects. Additionally, networks like the Allianz für Beteiligung, backed by the Baden-Württemberg state government, foster cooperative funding efforts. Local NGOs such as NABU groups and professional bodies involved in ecological and landscape architecture activities are also expected to play a role.

The Bamberg Landscape Conservation Association (LCA) is actively involved in these efforts. They collaborate with biologist Adam Geyer to protect the endangered Small Blue butterfly, found in the ecologically valuable meadows at the Altenburg. These meadows are maintained through grazing by a shepherd, with additional care by farmers necessary to prevent overgrowing and preserve biodiversity.

Recently, the LCA met with Mayor Jonas Glüsenkamp and Tobias Schenk to discuss landscape conservation. Mayor Glüsenkamp emphasized the importance of preserving the cultural landscape for biodiversity.

While the future of LNPD funds remains uncertain, the 'WE make landscape' campaign and potential alternative funding sources in Baden-Württemberg offer hope for the preservation of Bavaria's diverse habitats and the biodiversity they support.
