Berks Area Regional Transportation Authority (BARTA) Introduces New Fare Collection System for Special Services

Berks Area Regional Transportation Authority (BARTA) has partnered with Modeshift to pilot a new fare collection system for its paratransit service, BARTA Special Services. The pilot aims to provide greater convenience and equity for BARTA's customers, particularly for seniors and individuals with disabilities who rely on Special Services.

The new system will extend the "BARTA Go Mobile" brand, currently used in BARTA's fixed-route service, to the shared ride service. This alignment of technology between the two services creates one seamless experience under the BARTA Go Mobile brand.

Customers of BARTA Special Services can now use the BARTA Go Mobile app for fare payment and QR-code ride validation. In addition to the app, customers will be able to pay for trips using a mobile phone, a BARTA Go Mobile card, or cash. Existing BARTA Go Mobile cards will work across both fixed-route and shared-ride services.

The new on-vehicle payment systems and e-wallet functionality are part of the pilot. BARTA Go Mobile Smart Cards are reloadable and linked to an e-wallet for shared ride trips. Family members and caregivers can manage accounts for their loved ones online.

The pilot with BARTA is a natural evolution of Modeshift's partnership with the SCTA, showcasing the flexibility and customizability of Modeshift's system. Modeshift's platform delivers account-based fare collection, mobile ticketing, real-time passenger information, and contactless validation.

The new payment system builds on the success of Modeshift's 360-degree fare collection platform, which has modernized SCTA's fixed-route services. Miroslav Katsarov, the CEO of Modeshift, stated that the pilot demonstrates the platform's ability to meet the needs of agencies across modes while keeping things simple for riders.

Greg Downing, the Executive Director of SCTA, stated that the pilot is about providing access and convenience for BARTA Special Services customers. The pilot aims to simplify transactions and create a unified customer experience between the two services.

BARTA Special Services offers door-to-door transportation for seniors and individuals with disabilities across the county. The pilot is expected to enhance the service's accessibility and usability, making it easier for customers to navigate and pay for their trips.
