Austria's 'Big Phil' Gold Coin, Worth €3.2M, on Display in Berlin
Austria's largest gold coin, 'Big Phil', is currently on display in Berlin. This rare coin, weighing 31 kilograms and worth over 3.2 million euros, is an official means of payment in Austria. It's being exhibited at Pro Aurum, a precious metals trading company, to mark a special anniversary. The coin, issued in 2004 as a special minting, is named after the then Austrian chancellor, Wolfgang Schüssel. It features an organ on its front, symbolizing Austria's musical heritage, along with its face value of 100,000 euros. Despite its high face value, its actual material value is around 3.2 million euros, due to its composition of 1,000 ounces of pure gold. Pro Aurum, located at Hardenbergstraße 8 in Berlin, is hosting the coin for a one-day public exhibition on Tuesday, 29 September 2025. The coin is securely insured and guarded by the company, ensuring its safety during the event. The 'Big Phil' coin, a testament to Austria's craftsmanship and wealth, is a unique sight in Berlin. Its exhibition is a rare opportunity for the public to witness this official means of payment, worth millions in material value alone.
