Aurubis announces expansion of Avellino shaft for increased copper-cast wire production
In a significant move towards modernization and sustainability, Aurubis AG, a leading global provider of non-ferrous metals and one of the world's largest copper recyclers, has successfully completed the modernization of its furnace at the Avellino site in Italy. The upgraded facility, located also in Hamburg, Germany, is set to produce more copper rod, a critical base product for central future trends such as digital infrastructure, data centers, the energy transition, electrification, and electric mobility.
The modernization project involved extending the furnace height, installing a new furnace lining, a renewed refractory, an optimized charging system, and preparing for a modern burner system. Aurubis invested around 5 million € in these improvements, which are expected to increase the production capacity by approximately 20%.
Upon completion of the second expansion stage, planned for August 2026, the full capacity expansion will be available, and energy efficiency will be further increased, reducing specific gas consumption by up to 10%. This enhancement not only improves energy efficiency but also lays the foundation for further decarbonization initiatives and energy solutions.
Tim Kurth, Chief Operations Officer Custom Smelting & Products, highlighted that the investment in the modernization of the Avellino plant strengthens Aurubis' role as a reliable partner for the wire and cable industry, particularly in Southern Europe and North Africa. Bernardino Greco, Site Manager Aurubis Avellino, added that the modernization of the furnace lays the foundation for energy-efficient and future-proof production in Avellino.
In another notable development, Aurubis is the first company in Italy to initiate the certification process for 'The Copper Mark' for the Aurubino site. This framework promotes responsible practices throughout the entire copper value chain. Aurubino is a crucial component of Aurubis' robust and sustainable network of four production sites for copper rod, ensuring consistent supply to customers.
The modernized furnace at the Avellino site is for the production of copper rod, a move that strengthens the operational profitability of the Aurubis Group. This modernization project underscores Aurubis' commitment to producing high-quality copper products while maintaining a sustainable and responsible approach to its operations.
