August sees certain Social Security beneficiaries receiving twice their usual payments

In August 2025, millions of Americans will receive their Social Security benefits in two installments instead of the usual single payment. This adjustment is due to a scheduling change caused by the federal holiday on Monday, September 1 (Labor Day) and the fact that Social Security benefits are not distributed on weekends.

For those receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), the August payments will be distributed on August 1 and August 29. This means that SSI recipients who typically receive their payment on the first of the month will receive an additional payment at the end of August, while those who usually get their payment on the second Wednesday of the month will receive theirs earlier than usual.

The reason for this double payment is simple: the September 1 payment falls on a federal holiday, which causes the Social Security Administration (SSA) to issue the September payment early, on the last business day of August (August 29). Since the usual August payment is still made on August 1, recipients receive two payments in August: one for August and one early for September.

It's important to note that this adjustment does not mean recipients get extra money; rather, the September payment is simply paid a few days ahead of the regular schedule. Consequently, there will be no SSI payment in September 2025 because its payment was advanced to August 29.

For recipients of retirement benefits who began receiving benefits before May 1997 or those receiving both SSI and SSDI, their payment date will be moved to Friday, August 2. Those receiving both retirement and SSI benefits will get their checks on August 1, while the rest of the year’s payment schedule remains unchanged, with monthly payments issued on the first of each month unless that day falls on a weekend or holiday, in which case payments are moved to the previous business day.

For Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) recipients, the August payment date depends on their birthdate. August 14 is the payment date for those born between the 1st and 10th, August 21 for those born between the 11th and 20th, and August 28 for those born between the 21st and 31st.

Payments will resume on October 1, 2025 and again on October 31, 2025 (since Nov. 1 falls on a Saturday). Always verify your account details to ensure everything is up to date. In case of a delay, wait three business days before reporting it to the Social Security Administration or visiting your local SSA office.

Currently, 7.4 million people in the U.S. receive SSI. The average monthly SSI benefit is $717.75, while the maximum is $967 for individuals and $1,450 for couples.

Remember, this adjustment is only for August 2025, and the rest of the year’s payment schedule remains unchanged. For more information, visit the SSA's website or contact your local SSA office.

  1. People who usually receive SSI payments on the first of the month may find themselves with a surprise in their account at the end of August, as the August payments will include an early September payment due to a federal holiday on September 1.
  2. Within the realm of personal finance, those who are Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) recipients must keep in mind that the August payment date varies based on their birthdate, so it's essential to check the specific date for their individual circumstances to avoid any unexpected discrepancies.
