AT&T Tops Phishing Impersonation List in 2022, Cloudflare Warns
AT&T Inc. topped the list of brands most impersonated in phishing attacks in 2022, according to a recent report by Cloudflare. The tech giant's email security offering blocked a staggering 2.3 billion unwanted emails last year, highlighting the growing threat of phishing to both consumers and businesses.
Phishing, the fastest growing internet crime, targets reputable brands to steal sensitive information. Finance, technology, and telecom industries are the most commonly impersonated. Cloudflare's global report on the Top 50 Brands Used in Phishing Attacks revealed that besides AT&T, other companies like Xerox State Healthcare, Arietis Health, and Great Expressions Dental Centers were frequently mimicked in 2022.
To combat this, Cloudflare announced new anti-phishing protections with Cloudflare One. These include automatic identification and blocking of 'confusable' domains, which are designed to look like legitimate ones. The company's machine learning and data analysis provide unique insight into phishing domains, enabling proactive protection for its Zero Trust customers.
With nearly 20% of all websites protected by its global network, Cloudflare is at the forefront of the fight against phishing. Its 2022 report serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by phishing attacks, and the importance of robust security measures to protect both consumers and businesses.
