Approval process underway for the new A43 tunnel project
The Ruhr metropolitan area is set for a significant development in its transportation infrastructure with the opening of the new Tunnel A43. This expansion of the A43 to six lanes marks a milestone in the city's transport development.
However, the opening of the Tunnel A43 comes with some disruptions. The A42 will be fully closed for several days from Friday evening, August 15, at 9 pm to Monday morning, August 18, at 5 am. This closure is necessary to allow for the safe opening and commissioning of the new Baukau Tunnel section.
The A42 closure involves specific traffic management plans and detour routes to manage traffic flow effectively during the transition period. Westbound and eastbound traffic on the A42 will be diverted to established detour routes avoiding the closed section.
For westbound traffic approaching the Herne interchange, vehicles are directed to exit earlier onto parallel federal roads, such as the B58 or B230. Eastbound traffic will be detoured via local roads around Herne, utilizing parallel routes to re-enter A42 beyond the closure. Larger vehicles and freight traffic are given alternate recommended paths to avoid narrow or residential streets. Clear detour signs are placed well ahead of the closure to guide motorists through the alternative routes seamlessly.
Traffic control measures include clear signage indicating the closure and guiding drivers to alternative routes. Temporary speed limits and lane adjustments are implemented near the Herne interchange to ensure safety. Traffic monitoring systems and personnel are deployed to manage congestion and respond to incidents swiftly. Coordination with local authorities ensures emergency access and support for affected areas.
The new Baukau Tunnel, 550 meters long, connects the A43 in the direction of Münster with the A42 in the direction of Oberhausen at the Herne interchange. The opening of the Tunnel A43 is being conducted by the motorway operator, Autobahn Westfalen. The connection from the A43 in the direction of Münster to the A42 towards Duisburg will remain closed for final work until Monday afternoon.
NRW Transport Minister Oliver Krischer will be present at the ceremonial opening of the new Baukau Tunnel on Monday, August 18, at 10 am. For those interested in daily happenings in the city, the Herne-Newsletter provides updates and can be signed up for free.
