anticipate no mid-season adjustments from Rafael Stone
In the past few days, the Rockets have been connected to Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler. According to ESPN's Shams Charania, Miami is open to hearing out offers for the previous All-Star. Alongside the Golden State Warriors and Dallas Mavericks, the Rockets have been highlighted as a serious potential suitor.
Given Houston's impressive season so far (currently second in the Western Conference with a 17-8 record) and the stockpile of trade assets the team's management has acquired, it's not surprising that the Rockets might be open to making an upgrade before the trade deadline this year.
However, in a recent stint on SiriusXM, Rockets general manager Rafael Stone negated any speculations about seeking significant changes to the team's lineup this season. "There's no intention to change anything, and I'd be shocked if anything changes this season," stated Stone. He added that while he listens to any proposals as part of his job duties, he's not actively pursuing any trades.
Financially speaking, the Rockets have room for any major deals. They are currently $10.5 million under the luxury tax threshold and $15.2 million below the first apron.
Steven Adams ($12.6 million), Jeff Green ($8 million), Jock Landale ($8 million), and Jae’Sean Tate ($7.6 million) are tradeable salary options for the Rockets if a potential trade partner is in search of salary relief. They also possess claim to future draft picks from the Brooklyn Nets and Phoenix Suns.
Houston has consistently been among the league's best defensive teams throughout the season. Unfortunately, the offense has faltered, placing them among the bottom third of the league. If Stone manages to obtain a perimeter scorer at the deadline without losing any key players from his core, the Rockets could experience an upward trend.
Despite Stone's denial, Butler seems to match well with head coach Ime Udoka's defense-focused coaching style. The Tomball local is also reportedly keen on returning home. Even though Stone may not have plans to make a move, it's still a story worth keeping tabs on.
The Rockets' financial flexibility, with a significant salary cap space, could potentially allow them to make a major business move for a player like Jimmy Butler. With Butler's strong performance in sports and his interest in returning home, a potential deal could significantly improve the Rockets' offensive capabilities, especially in the perimeter.
