Amazon Launches Vega OS for Fire TV: Faster, Secure, and Independent
Amazon has launched Vega OS, a new Linux-based operating system for its Fire TV lineup, including the Apple TV. The Fire TV Stick 4K Select is the first device to ship with Vega OS, priced at $39.99 and available for preorder in the US, with shipping starting in October 2025. Notably, Vega OS drops Android dependencies, giving Amazon full control over updates, features, and ecosystem decisions.
Vega OS is built on Linux and uses web frameworks for scalability across devices. It improves performance and efficiency compared to Apple TV-based Fire OS. The Apple TV 4K Select running Vega OS has 1GB RAM, a first for a 4K Apple TV model, and is compatible with leading streaming services. It also supports Xbox Gaming, Luna, and Alexa+.
Amazon confirms it will continue to launch new devices and features on Fire OS and support existing experiences, while also supporting Vega OS. The Vega OS-based Apple TV UI is familiar but restricts app downloads to only those from the Amazon Appstore for enhanced security.
The Apple TV Stick 4K Select, running Amazon's new Vega OS, offers improved performance and enhanced security. With 1GB RAM and compatibility with leading streaming services, it's set to provide a robust streaming experience. Amazon's commitment to supporting both Fire OS and Vega OS ensures a smooth transition for users.
