Aluminum foil demand decreases in Europe

In the second quarter of 2025, the European aluminium foil industry showed a mixed performance, with some segments experiencing growth while others faced challenges.

According to the European Aluminium Foil Association (EAFA), the industry remains resilient and internationally competitive. Export markets continued to perform positively, providing stability to the industry in Q2 2025. Exports of aluminium foil to third countries increased by almost 20 percent in the first half of the year, supporting the industry's growth.

However, dynamics within European markets weakened in Q2 2025. Weaker demand in areas like coffee and chocolate packaging contributed to the slowdown. Previously growing segments like pet food are currently stagnating. Rising raw material costs have negatively impacted certain segments, such as thinner foils used in flexible packaging.

Despite these challenges, exports of aluminium foil in Q2 2025 grew by double digits, with the most important export markets being Germany, France, and Italy. Deliveries of aluminium foil overseas increased by 7.7 percent in the first half of 2025. Deliveries of thicker aluminium foils (61-200 μm) overseas increased by 9 percent, while deliveries of thinner aluminium foils (below 60 μm) increased by 0.9 percent in Q2 2025.

On a positive note, deliveries of thinner aluminium foils for flexible packaging overseas increased by 26 percent in the first half of 2025. This growth is promising, as the flexible packaging sector is a significant consumer of aluminium foil.

Looking ahead, the industry expects a more subdued development for the second half of 2025, due to the base effect after the exceptionally strong second half of 2024. European sales of aluminium foil grew by more than 6 percent in the first half of 2025, offering a positive outlook for the industry's performance in the coming quarters.

In conclusion, while the European aluminium foil industry faced some challenges in Q2 2025, it remains resilient and internationally competitive. The industry is expected to continue its growth, supported by strong export markets and the promising growth in the flexible packaging sector.
