Alcatel Submarine Networks Boosts UN Ocean Decade Collaboration

The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), coordinated by UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO), has seen a significant boost in collaboration. Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) has become the first company to join the Decade's Corporate Data Group, led by Fugro, an Ocean Decade Alliance member.

ASN, specialising in trans-oceanic telecommunications cables, has installed over 700,000 km of optical submarine systems worldwide. The company's decision to join the Corporate Data Group is a testament to the Decade's goal of fostering transformative collaboration among science, industry, and governments. Jérémie Maillet, ASN's VP of Marine Operations, expressed delight in supporting the Decade's objectives.

The Corporate Data Group, led by Fugro and now joined by ASN and Ocean Infinity, aims to develop strategies for industrial companies to provide public access to their privately held ocean data. This initiative aligns with the Ocean Decade's mission to stimulate ocean science and knowledge generation, reversing the decline of the ocean system and catalysing new opportunities for sustainable development.

ASN's joining the Corporate Data Group marks a significant step towards the Ocean Decade's goal of creating transformative collaboration. With more companies expected to follow, this initiative promises to unlock valuable ocean data, driving new insights and sustainable development.
