Abandoned graveyard plots designated for sale, with anticipation for transactions to start in October.
Arlington City to Sell Abandoned Plots in Cemetery
The city of Arlington is making preparations to sell 1,158 abandoned plots in the Arlington Cemetery, following a decision by the city council.
The city's strategic initiatives team, led by manager Sarah Stubblefield, has been working diligently to prepare the cemetery for the sale. This includes reaching out to historical organizations, assisted care facilities, Seniorific, and social media to gather information about the abandoned plots.
Stubblefield's team also re-platted the property to establish available sites in the cemetery. As a result of their efforts, they received over 40 inquiries about the abandoned plots.
To handle daily operational tasks at the cemetery, the city has contracted the Arlington National Cemetery Directorate and Wade Funeral Home. The city is also setting up websites, forms, and other administrative processes for the sale of the abandoned plots.
The city has reserved over 90 gravesites through its waitlist system for the sale of the abandoned plots. Sales for the plots are expected to begin next month.
The city is making an effort to find suitable locations for families who later find documentation of ownership of an abandoned plot in the cemetery.
The strategic initiatives team received inquiries from various sources regarding the abandoned plots in the Arlington Cemetery. These inquiries came from historical organizations, assisted care facilities, Seniorific, and social media.
The city is preparing to return the Arlington Cemetery to full operations, with the sale of the abandoned plots marking a significant step in this process.
